Lost by a Whisker...
So I failed to bag the John W. Campbell award for Best New Writer. The really frustrating thing was that I only just missed out...Well, if you count fourth out of six as just missed out. Yes, if it hadn't been for the more popular half of the field the Campbell would be mine...
But I did get more first place votes than 'No Award'. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, 'no award'! Yes, I am a marginally more popular choice than throwing the plaque in the bin.
Anyway, many congratulations to Mary Robinette Kowal, who was indeed the winner, rightly lifted on angel wings to the heady heights of glory. Commiserations to Scott Lynch, David Anthony Durham, David Louis Edelman, and Jon Armstrong, who share with me the bitter, bitter dregs of failure...

It's been 5 years since I've read anything. After finishing my degree the last thing I ever wanted to do was pick up another book. But after a friend insisted I'd like "The Blade Itself" I gave it a try and couldn't put it down. I tore through it and "Before they are Hanged" in 2 days, couldn't wait for "Last Argument of Kings" to release in the US and imported it from the UK. I've never read anything like you're work.
Don't worry about the award. Hundreds of authors I don't care anything for win awards all the time. You're in a class of your own. To hell with the rest and for the love of all that is holy, keep writing!

On the other hand, if you look at the field - pre-nominations, that is - how many "New Writers" do you think were out there? And you came 4th! Out of ... a hundred? Hundreds? Either way, I think you should be proud.

According to reports Patrick Rothfuss mentioned your name at a panel (context unknown, ask Isis next time we're out) and the audience seemed nonplussed. A golden opportunity to sell yourself to the masses, lost!
